A Long Way to Go to Release

I installed the latest Beta of Internet Explorer on my work laptop yesterday. In part, I was hoping to find out whether the last two applications I built which embed an Internet Explorer browser as the user interface (which is a great way to build an application’s UI quickly) would work for our customers that upgrade their browser. Unfortunately, I never did find out.

Wil Shipley Bets Gates Won’t Ship Vista by January

In his recent post, Wil Shipley lays down the gauntlet and bets Bill Gates $10,000 that Microsoft will be unable to ship Windows Vista on time (AKA January, which is actually much later than it was originally scheduled to ship).

How I’d love to see Gates take up this challenge. Of course, it would be best if Shipley won.

A World Without Microsoft

The recent announcement that the WinFS project is dead has sparked a lot of commentary. One of the more insightful pieces is Microsoft Buries Cairo, Microsoft Monitor. I can still remember receiving a briefing on Cairo while I was working in Atlanta — to hear the Microsoft evangelist tell it, the Cairo “file” system (or object system) was going to revolutionise software development. That was the whole gist of Cairo, but it never came to fruition.

I just finished reading an interesting article in the NY Times about the problems plaguing Dell Computer. The article makes a big deal about HP’s new The Computer Is Personal Again campaign, so I thought I’d check out the laptop offerings from HP.

The Searing Pain of Using Windows

At long last, I’ve purchased a cell phone. I held out as long as I could. My claim was that there weren’t any good cellphones that had all the features I wanted. My list included:

  • Worked with Apple’s iSync to synchronise contacts, schedule, and tasks
  • Supported world-wide GSM
  • Wasn’t made by Motorola, because their phones suck
